About Appreciation and Care – architectural recordings is an exhibition by architect Heidi Svenningsen Kajita.

14. March 2013 – 16. May 2014
Mon – Fri 9 – 17

The exhibition shows architectural recordings of inhabitation- and building processes in 1960s modernist large scale housing estates. Dwellings, fences, sheds, institutions, vegetation and mess can be seen to frame courtyards in the sugar cube plans. Residents, housing associations and local municipalities have both appreciated and cared for these spaces over time.

Heidi Svenningsen Kajita reveals relations between inhabitation and materiality in large orthographic drawings (180 cm x 230 cm) mixing digital print and pencil on tracing paper, archive material and a text document referring to the architectural specification. Focusing in six places in three different estates in Albertslund, Malmö and Helsingborg this interrogation moves through mental, bodily, physical, constructional and conceptual aspects of use. These explorations aim to expand the technical perspectives of architecture and challenge the dominant problem-oriented approach to the housing estates of this period.

This work is in itself seen as an act of care for the stuff and experiences in the estates. As such the exhibition is, not to be understood as a finished product, but as a pause within a continuous process.

Heidi Svenningsen Kajita is an architect and writer working with methods and theories that relate architecture to use, appreciation and duties of care. She graduated from University of East London where she has also taught as senior lecturer for a number of years. Heidi has practised architecture in London. The work in this exhibition is part of an on-going Ph.D. project at the Danish Royal Academy School of Fine Arts School of Architecture.
